Donald Ross (1872–1948) was a Scottish-born golf course architect who became one of the most prolific and influential designers in American golf history. Born in Dornoch, Scotland, Ross apprenticed under Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews before immigrating to the United States in 1899. He settled in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where he served as professional and course designer at Pinehurst Resort for nearly five decades. His philosophy emphasized strategic design, crowned greens with subtle contours, and natural integration with the landscape.
Ross designed or redesigned over 400 courses across North America, with an enduring legacy concentrated in the Northeast and Southeast. His portfolio includes Seminole, often named among the most admired courses in the world, alongside Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills South, Scioto, Oak Hill East, Inverness, and Aronimink—all courses that have hosted major championships. Other notable designs featured in Course Vaults include Plainfield, Interlachen, Skokie, Wannamoisett, and countless Carolina gems such as Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Southern Pines. His work ranged from elite private clubs to accessible public courses, shaping American golf architecture throughout the Golden Age and beyond.
