OAKLAND HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Bloomfield Hills, MI, USA
Designed by Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones Sr.
The North Course at Oakland Hills Country Club opened in 1924, designed by Donald Ross as a companion to the club's more famous South Course. Ross routed the North through rolling terrain characteristic of southeastern Michigan's glacial landscape, creating a layout that shares the property's mature hardwood forests and natural elevation changes but follows a distinct character from its championship sibling.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. made modifications to the North Course in the 1970s, updating bunkers and greens to reflect evolving design standards while maintaining Ross's strategic framework. The course measures over 7,000 yards from the back tees and features the kind of elevated, contoured greens and diagonal bunkering typical of Ross's work. The routing moves through corridors of oak, maple, and elm trees, with several holes playing across or along natural valleys that add both beauty and strategic interest to approach shots.
While the South Course has hosted multiple major championships and remains Oakland Hills' tournament venue, the North Course serves as the primary everyday course for members. It provides a more relaxed but still challenging round, with less severe rough and greens that, while demanding, do not carry the extreme contours of the South. The North Course allows Oakland Hills members to experience Ross's design philosophy in a setting that emphasizes enjoyment alongside competition, making it a valued part of one of America's most storied golf clubs.
Reviews
Not as good as the south, obviously. But still very fun. Just hard to live in the shadow of the south. Definitely the “members” course
