DEAL GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Deal, NJ, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Deal Golf & Country Club occupies a narrow strip of land along the Atlantic Ocean in Deal, New Jersey, approximately an hour south of New York City. Donald Ross designed the course in 1897, making it one of his earliest American works and among the first courses he laid out after emigrating from Scotland. The property sits on classic linksland terrain, with the routing running parallel to the coastline and offering ocean views from several holes. The course measures relatively short by modern standards but presents challenges through its exposed coastal setting, where wind direction and intensity significantly influence play.
The layout features the firm turf, natural contours, and strategic bunkering characteristic of Ross's design philosophy, though the course has been modified over the decades. Several holes play directly along the shoreline, while others turn inland through slightly more protected corridors. The greens display the subtle internal movement and false fronts typical of Ross's work, rewarding precise approach shots and thoughtful short game play. The property's narrow width constrains the routing but also creates an intimate feel distinct from sprawling inland layouts.
Deal Golf & Country Club has maintained a private membership since its founding and represents one of the few authentic seaside courses in New Jersey. The club has hosted regional amateur competitions over the years and remains a fixture in the state's golf community. Its location within the affluent shore communities of Monmouth County and its Ross pedigree give it historical significance in American golf architecture, particularly as an early example of the Scottish architect's adaptation to American coastal terrain.
Reviews
Really great members club at the Jersey Shore. Often overshadowed by neighbor Hollywood. Conditions were great the summer I played and the risk-reward shots are abundant. Wonderful place to call home if you live in the area or spend the summer down the shore.
Played many times as another solid local private club-it’s kept well and looks nice, but the layout makes you want more. It seems a bit squished into less space and would be great if they had more land. Punishing rough and it can be fun with solid greens and ability to be creative
Very old school course that is just not long enough for the modern game. Some very cool short holes with small greens, but it’s no match for the current distances. Cool finishing Par 3.
