FORSYTH COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Winston-Salem, NC, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast, Donald Ross, Kris Spence, Willard Byrd

Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem traces its origins to the golden age of American golf course architecture, with both Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast contributing to its design lineage. The club was established in the 1920s during the period when these two legendary architects were shaping courses throughout the Carolinas. Ross, who maintained a home and design office in nearby Pinehurst, created the original layout, while Tillinghast's involvement came through subsequent design work that blended with the Ross foundation.
The course occupies rolling Piedmont terrain characteristic of North Carolina's central region, with elevation changes and mature tree-lined corridors that define the playing corridors. The routing takes advantage of natural contours, creating strategic interest through varied hole lengths and green complexes that reflect the design philosophies of its golden age architects. Later work by Willard Byrd and Kris Spence has modernized certain aspects while respecting the historical design elements.
Forsyth Country Club has served as a significant venue in North Carolina golf, hosting regional amateur championships and contributing to Winston-Salem's reputation as a golf community. The club maintains traditional country club amenities and has been part of the area's social fabric for nearly a century. The course presents a blend of architectural eras, with the foundational work of Ross and Tillinghast providing strategic bones that have been adapted to contemporary playing standards while preserving the character of early twentieth-century design principles.
Reviews
A real treat and a tale of 2 nines. The front was designed by Ross and has a lot of up and down and the holes are singular. The back nine was designed by Tillinghast and is on less dramatic land but you can see the other holes. The end result is a real test from 2 of the GOATs
