YORK GOLF & TENNIS CLUB
🇺🇸 York, ME, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

York Golf & Tennis Club occupies a coastal setting in southern Maine, designed by Donald Ross and opened in the 1920s. The course sits on rolling terrain characteristic of the region's glacially shaped landscape, with elevation changes that provide natural movement through the routing. Ross's design work in New England during this period typically emphasized strategic bunkering, green contours that reward proper approach angles, and routing that follows the land's natural flow rather than imposing dramatic alterations.
The layout moves across varied topography with views toward the Atlantic coastline, though the course itself is set slightly inland from the immediate shore. Ross's design principles are evident in the green complexes, which feature subtle breaks and crowned surfaces that demand thoughtful iron play. The bunkering style reflects his era, with hazards positioned to challenge both tee shots and approaches while offering recovery options for skilled players.
York Golf & Tennis Club functions as a traditional private club serving the southern Maine coastal community. The club combines golf with tennis facilities, reflecting the multi-sport country club model common to establishments of its founding era. The course has undergone periodic maintenance and restoration work over the decades to preserve Ross's design intent while adapting to modern agronomic standards and playing expectations. It remains a representative example of Ross's work in the New England region, where he completed dozens of courses during his prolific career based out of nearby Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Reviews
Let me tell you something, if you like quirky, get on a plane right now and go there. The first hole is a 200 yard par 3 with a small green. You wonder to yourself, what the heck did I just get into? The second is a fairly straightforward par 4… and then the golf course opens up into something pretty special. The third hole has to be one of the great holes in Maine. 3-16 are Ross using every piece of land advantage he had. 17-18 kind of just get you back home but you needed to catch your breath anyway. If you're able, go!
