ROARING GAP GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Roaring Gap, NC, USA
Designed by Donald Ross, Kris Spence

Roaring Gap Golf Club, nestled high in the northwestern North Carolina mountains, embodies the spirit of a bygone golfing era, a subtle riposte to the modern game. The course itself, while not steeped in championship lore, provides a compelling test carved from the undulating terrain, with notable elevation changes and a layout that encourages strategic play rather than pure power.
Designed by George Cobb, a noted architect of the mid-20th century, Roaring Gap reflects the understated charm of parkland golf. Its fairways, lined with mature hardwoods, demand thoughtful club selection and precise shot placement, rewarding accuracy over brute strength. The course gently cascades down the mountain, with doglegs and strategically placed bunkers that force golfers to contemplate each shot. While it favors neither faders nor drawers, a steady hand and an appreciation for the ground game are essential.
Roaring Gap is a haven for those seeking refuge from the relentless pressure of modern life. The club's membership, drawn largely from families who have summered in the area for generations, values camaraderie and tradition above all else. Roaring Gap remains a place where time slows, where the simple pleasures of golf and genuine fellowship are cherished, and where the mountain air carries the echoes of laughter and friendly competition.
Reviews
Hidden gem. Short but extremely compelling layout, superbly fun greens. Golden age.
Roaring Gap as a whole is the perfect example of an adult summer camp. From the lake to the Donald Ross golf course, it is a true hidden gem in NC. With some of the fastest greens in the south conditions are pristine here. It often feels more like playing in the north east than anywhere in the south. Tee boxes consistently roll at an 11 on the stimp with greens approaching a 15 in the right time of year. You could play here all summer long and never get tired of it. The views on the back 9 are some of my favorites, with long range mountain views that make you feel on top of the world
