HYDE PARK GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Jacksonville, FL, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

Hyde Park Golf Club sits in Jacksonville's Riverside neighborhood, occupying land along the St. Johns River that has hosted golf since 1925. Donald Ross designed the original layout during the prolific mid-1920s phase of his career, when he was shaping courses throughout Florida and the Southeast. The course reflects Ross's characteristic approach to modest terrain, using subtle green contours, strategic bunkering, and thoughtful routing to create interest on relatively flat ground typical of northeastern Florida's coastal plain.
The layout plays through mature live oaks and southern pines, with several holes running near or along the river's edge. Ross's greens here feature the crowned surfaces and false fronts he favored, rewarding precise approach shots and penalizing marginal strikes with challenging recovery positions. The bunkering follows his economical style—placed to define ideal angles and punish specific mistakes rather than simply framing aesthetics. Elevation change is minimal, so strategy derives from green complexes, bunker placement, and wind off the water.
Hyde Park operates as a private club and maintains a traditional membership culture reflective of its nearly century-long presence in Jacksonville's Riverside community. The course has undergone periodic updates over the decades to address modern maintenance practices and playing standards, though the fundamental Ross routing and green sites remain intact. It represents a well-preserved example of Ross's work in Florida, where many of his designs from this era have been lost to development or extensively altered.
Reviews
Thought to be a Donald Ross design, actually a Stanley Thomas. If this course had good funding, it would be one of the best public tracks in Jax. The layout is pretty fun and the greens are definitely Ross-esque which is why it’s believed to be one. The Back 9 definitely outshines the front but a fun track all around - not usually in that great of shape though
