SOUTHERN PINES GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Southern Pines, NC, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Southern Pines at Southern Pines Golf Club occupies hallowed ground in the cradle of American golf, steeped in the traditions of a bygone era when the game's character was etched into the landscape. This classic course, nestled amidst the rolling terrain and towering longleaf pines of the North Carolina Sandhills, embodies the spirit of Golden Age design.
Architect Donald Ross lent his masterful hand to Southern Pines, creating a layout known for its strategic bunkering and subtle green complexes. The course, while not overly long by modern standards, presents a true test of shot-making and course management. Favoring a more deliberate style of play, the meandering fairways and strategic doglegs reward players who can shape their shots and approach greens with precision. The spirit of the membership, while proud, is without pretension.
Southern Pines Golf Club is the kind of place where generations of golfers share stories and forge bonds over rounds, where the echoes of laughter and the clink of glasses carry across the veranda after play. This club is a fixture of the community, more than just a golf course.
Reviews
The people were great. But probably the ugliest clubhouse I’ve ever seen in all of golf. I hate to say this, but I really don’t get the hype. Ross design and fun enough but when I tell you it’s generic, I mean that sincerely. This course could be any decently kept muni in any state in the south. Not a problem for me but we saw a number of people hopping a fence to the property and crossing fairways to go fishing in the ponds. A group of eight was in front of us in tee shirts and jeans at one point. Love Ross. Don’t need to go back. Good condition, though.
Pristine course. Classic Donald Ross pines course. Lots of sand and waste area. Super fun layout with some driveable par 4’s and difficult greens.
This might be the best course in all of Pinehurst. Hands down a must play. The work Kyle Franz did to turn this back into a Ross masterpiece is truly exemplary.
Reminded me a lot of the Sandbelt courses in Melbourne Australia!
Great layout by Ross, possibly the best land he had to work with. The renovation was needed, but I think it’s a bit too severe. Still a great walk and a lot of interesting holes and variety.
1 of 3 great Donald Ross courses in the Pine Needles family. Recently renovated another can’t miss on your trip to the area. Good par 3 variety wide landing areas, interesting holes with some of the most wild greens you’ll find.
Sneaky good
Played it before renovation
Fast greens, sloped fairways , and tough approach shots. SP is a must when you go to NC
When it comes to strictly the golf course, it might be my favorite layout I’ve played. Just a ton of fun. Pace was slow but never felt slow, because you want to circle these greens twice to decide how to play your chip or putt. Great job of having some really fun/wild contours on the greens without feeling ‘mickey mouse’ or unfair. I loved it. Hope to go back. That said — the clubhouse is very minimal, not the ideal group hang for those of you on a trip, but definitely go play it anyway.
