THE COUNTRY CLUB OF VIRGINIA - WESTHAMPTON
🇺🇸 Richmond, VA, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Westhampton, one of three championship courses at The Country Club of Virginia, isn’t just a Richmond landmark; it’s a living testament to classic parkland design principles. Its gently rolling terrain, carved amidst mature hardwoods and whispering pines west of the city, offers a deceptively challenging test where position, not just power, dictates success.
Originally designed by the Golden Age master Donald Ross, Westhampton presents a layout that subtly favors a strategic fade. While not a brute, the course rewards intelligent course management, particularly navigating the doglegs and strategically placed bunkers guarding the undulating greens. The course was modified by son, Donald Ross Jr, in 1958, and the greens rebuilt in 2003, under the guiding hand of Bill Love.
Westhampton reflects its club's strong history of amateur golf, often hosting state and regional competitions. The focus here leans more toward providing a meticulously maintained, enjoyable experience for its membership, rather than pursuing widespread notoriety. Indeed, members often gather in the club's grill for the notable crab cakes.
