CAMDEN COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Camden, SC, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Camden Country Club breathes South Carolina golf history into every round, a testament to enduring design and community spirit, nestled just off the historic Camden battlefield. The club stands as a pillar of the tight-knit community in this part of the Palmetto state.
Designed in the early 20th century, this parkland-style course, with its gently rolling fairways and mature Carolina pines, presents a classic challenge. Initial impressions are deceiving, with seemingly wide fairways; however, errant shots are quickly punished by the thick rough and strategically placed bunkers that guard many of the smallish greens. The course favors a strategic, rather than purely power-based, approach. While not overly long by modern standards, savvy play and deft touch around the greens are crucial for scoring well. The prevailing winds can also significantly impact club selection, adding another layer of complexity.
Though not a championship venue on the national stage, Camden Country Club holds a revered position within the region, hosting countless amateur events and member tournaments. The club fosters a competitive yet convivial atmosphere. A tight knit membership is a key reason for the course’s success throughout the years.
Beyond the course, the club is known for its unwavering commitment to Southern hospitality, which permeates the entire experience. After a round, one might find members sharing stories and laughter over the club's renowned fried chicken, a local favorite, in the relaxed ambiance of the clubhouse.
Reviews
Fantastic golf course. Great design and has been in great shape every time I’ve played it. Plays long considering it’s a par 70. Railroad track and lack of homes on the course gives it a very traditional feel.
Some of my favorite green complexes I’ve ever played.
