THE WILMINGTON MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Wilmington, NC, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Wilmington Municipal Golf Course is a Donald Ross design that opened in 1926, part of the prolific architect's extensive portfolio of public and municipal courses throughout the Carolinas. The layout occupies gently rolling terrain in Wilmington, North Carolina, a coastal city with deep golf history dating to the early twentieth century. Ross's work here reflects his characteristic approach to accessible public golf: strategic bunkering, modest but well-contoured greens, and routing that makes thoughtful use of natural land movement without requiring excessive earthwork.
The course plays through a mix of mature pines and hardwoods typical of the North Carolina coastal plain, with enough elevation change to create variety in stance and approach angles. Ross's green complexes remain the central design feature, demanding accurate iron play and rewarding players who understand how to use slopes and contours. Over the decades, the layout has undergone modifications and tree growth has altered some playing corridors, but the fundamental character of a Ross municipal design—strategic options, walkable distances, and greens that test short game skill—remains evident.
Wilmington Municipal serves as an affordable public option in a region now known for resort and daily-fee courses. It represents an era when municipalities invested in quality golf architecture for everyday players, and it continues to introduce golfers to the principles of classic design. The course operates as a straightforward neighborhood facility, maintaining its role as accessible public golf in a city with expanding golf tourism.

A fantastic muni designed by Ross and renovated earlier this century. Excellent green complexes and a lot of variety throughout. Any city would be lucky to have a muni half as good as the Wilmington muni
One of my favorites. Zags home turf
