ESSEX COUNTY CLUB
🇺🇸 Manchester, MA, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Essex County Club, tucked into the folds of Manchester-by-the-Sea, is a testament to Herbert Leeds’ genius, a Golden Age layout fiercely defended by a membership deeply rooted in tradition and a healthy dose of Yankee pragmatism. It's a course where the spirit of Walter Travis – Leeds’s contemporary and occasional rival – lingers in the demanding green complexes.
The course unfolds over subtly rolling terrain, a unique blend of heathland and parkland, with strategically placed bunkers guarding approaches and greens. It's not a brute; rather, Essex demands thoughtful shot-making and an appreciation for angles. Its narrow fairways, often guarded by fescue and heather, subtly favor the player who can work the ball, rewarding strategic placement over sheer power. The inward nine, in particular, presents a stern test, demanding precision and creative shotmaking.
While Essex County Club hasn't played host to golf's grandest stages, it has served as a cherished competitive ground for generations of amateurs. Its standing is more regional, appreciated within the New England golf community for its challenging layout and unwavering commitment to the traditions of the game. The club, while not ostentatious, exudes an understated elegance, and its members often recount tales of spirited matches and post-round gatherings at the club’s bar, a ritual as integral to the Essex experience as the golf itself.
Reviews
Torrential downpour didn’t ruin this amazing day. One of if not the best Ross design out there. Back 9 is easily the best I’ve ever played and is littered with template holes and undulation. Can’t wait to go back!
If this isn't the most fun Donald Ross course to play, I don't know what is. One of the great members clubs in America. Quirk in every good way possible. The back may be the best 9 in Massachusetts (saying a lot).
Played it in Late fall so didn’t get the full experience but it was stunning none the less
Top 3 Donald Ross’ course. Like going back in time to see what Ross created
