MEMPHIS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Memphis, TN, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

Memphis Country Club occupies a wooded site in East Memphis, designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1927. The course represents Ross's work during the height of his prolific career, when he was shaping courses across the American South. The layout moves through rolling terrain with mature hardwoods framing the fairways, and the design reflects Ross's characteristic emphasis on strategic bunkering, elevated greens with subtle contours, and thoughtful risk-reward options from tee to green.
The routing takes advantage of the property's natural elevation changes, with several holes playing uphill or downhill to greens that require careful club selection and approach play. Ross's green complexes here feature the crowned, turtleback shapes he favored, where balls landing on the edges tend to roll away from the putting surface. The bunkering is positioned to challenge both the tee shot and the approach, rewarding players who think their way around the course rather than simply overpowering it.
Memphis Country Club has served as a fixture in the Memphis golf community for nearly a century, hosting regional amateur competitions and maintaining its place among Tennessee's established private clubs. The course has undergone periodic updates to address modern equipment and maintenance practices while preserving the essential character of Ross's design. The club's setting in a residential area of Memphis provides a parkland atmosphere, with the tree-lined corridors and traditional layout offering a contrast to more contemporary course designs in the region.
Reviews
Donald Ross course with amazing greens. Land locked so can’t do too much in terms of layout but they make the most of it. Course is always in perfect condition and the staff is excellent. A fun course where being in the fairway is paramount. Attacking Ross greens out of the rough rolling 13+ is near impossible and make sure not to short side yourself.
