Charles River Country Club sits in Newton Centre, a residential suburb west of Boston, on rolling terrain above the Charles River valley. Donald Ross designed the course in 1921, during the prolific middle period of his career when he was shaping courses throughout New England. The layout occupies approximately 140 acres of land that features natural elevation changes and mature tree-lined corridors characteristic of the region's parkland settings.

The routing makes use of the property's topography, with several holes playing across or along ridges and others descending into lower ground. Ross incorporated his typical design elements: greens with subtle interior contours and strategic bunkering that rewards accurate approach play. The course measures around 6,400 yards from the back tees, a length that reflects both the original scale of the design and the constraints of the suburban property.

Charles River Country Club has maintained a traditional private club atmosphere since its founding. The membership has historically included Boston-area families, and the club supports both golf and social activities typical of early twentieth-century country clubs in the region.
