NORTH ANDOVER COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Andover, MA, USA
Designed by Donald Ross, Ross Forbes

North Andover Country Club occupies rolling terrain in the Merrimack Valley north of Boston, where Donald Ross laid out the original eighteen holes in 1923. Ross Forbes, Donald Ross's nephew and longtime associate, later contributed refinements to the design. The course reflects the elder Ross's characteristic approach to New England sites: strategic bunkering, subtly contoured greens with false fronts and interior slopes, and routing that follows the natural land movement without excessive earthwork. The property features mature tree-lined fairways and elevation changes that create variety in stance and approach angles throughout the round.
The layout moves across gently rolling ground typical of northeastern Massachusetts, with several holes playing uphill or downhill and greens positioned to reward accurate iron play. Ross's green complexes remain the course's defining feature, demanding careful club selection and precise distance control. The bunkering style—modest in scale but strategically placed to challenge both tee shots and approaches—reflects the design philosophy Ross employed across dozens of New England clubs during the 1920s.
North Andover Country Club has served as a traditional private club for the local community since its founding, hosting regional amateur competitions and maintaining a membership culture centered on golf and family activities. The course has undergone periodic updates to preserve Ross's design intent while accommodating modern maintenance practices and playing standards, keeping the layout relevant for contemporary golfers while respecting its historical character.
Reviews
Maybe the most interesting and unique Donald Ross there is - and I mean that. A golf course that has a road run through THE MIDDLE OF IT. 3 holes on one side, 6 on the other. On the first and 2nd tee, there is a surprisingly good chance of breaking a moving windshield. If you hit a driver longer than 260 you will not need it.
