HILLCREST COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA, USA
Designed by Willie Watson
West Los Angeles’ Hillcrest Country Club is defined not just by its storied golf course, but by its legacy as a haven for the city's Jewish community, a place where acceptance and camaraderie took root amidst a landscape of exclusion. The gently rolling terrain, typical of Southern California parkland courses, presents a strategic test. While not overly long, the course rewards thoughtful placement and creative shot-making over brute force, with subtly contoured greens demanding a deft touch. Favoring a draw, Hillcrest is not considered extremely penal or overly long, allowing high-end amateurs and professionals alike to score.
Originally designed by Willie Watson, with later enhancements by renowned architects such as William Bell, and more recently Kyle Phillips, Hillcrest bears the marks of evolution. Its design features mature trees that frame the fairways, presenting a classic, almost timeless aesthetic in the heart of the city. Each iteration reflects the shifting trends in golf course architecture while preserving the course's inherent character and playability.
While Hillcrest hasn't hosted a major professional championship, it stands as a significant venue for regional and amateur competitions, a testament to its challenging yet fair layout. More importantly, it has served as the backdrop for countless rounds among its prominent membership. Groucho Marx, a longtime member, famously quipped that he’d never join a club that would have him. The club's continued presence remains a place of legacy and acceptance, within the heart of Los Angeles.
The club, known for its celebrity lore and its classic, old-school vibe, offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. It’s not just about the golf; it's about the traditions, the history, and the sense of community that permeates every corner of Hillcrest. And, for those in the know, don't leave without trying the Matzah Ball Soup.
Reviews
No pictures out of respect for the club, but can’t say enough about how good HCC is. Every single detail carefully considered and beautifully executed. Best halfway house in all of golf, and MY GOD the VIEWS!
Quickly becoming a favorite and now firmly in the elite tier of Riv/LACC/BaCC/Hillcrest. Also one of the best restaurants on the westside, and undoubtedly the best halfway house in Southern California
