LAKE SUNAPEE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 New London, NH, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

Lake Sunapee Country Club occupies rolling terrain in the Lake Sunapee region of central New Hampshire, where Donald Ross designed the course in 1924. Ross worked extensively throughout New England during this period, and Lake Sunapee represents his characteristic approach to routing over natural contours. The layout moves across varied elevations with fairways that follow the land's movement rather than impose dramatic earthwork. Greens feature the subtle internal contours and strategic bunkering typical of Ross's design vocabulary, rewarding approach shots that account for pin position and green slope.
The course plays through a mix of open and wooded areas, with views toward the surrounding hills and glimpses of the lake that gives the club its name. The property's natural drainage and elevation changes create playing corridors that shift in character throughout the round. Several holes incorporate cross-bunkers and greenside complexes that require thoughtful club selection and course management. The greens themselves remain the central design feature, with enough tilt and undulation to make putting a significant factor in scoring.
Lake Sunapee Country Club functions as a traditional summer-season club in the New Hampshire Lakes Region, serving members and their guests during the warmer months. The course has undergone periodic restoration work to maintain Ross's original design principles while adapting to modern maintenance practices and playing expectations. It represents a well-preserved example of Ross's work in a region where he shaped numerous courses during the golden age of American golf architecture.
Reviews
Sunapee is a great summer club in New England. It is an old Donald Ross and has a fantastic layout that traverses the property. Conditions are solid here and there is a premium on strategy. My favorite hole is the 12th hole par 3, about 240 uphill into a blind green. You could play here for 40 years and never get tired of it. Plus, very walking friendly.
