Kernwood at Kernwood Country Club

Kernwood Country Club sits on elevated terrain in Salem, Massachusetts, with views across the North Shore toward the Atlantic. Donald Ross designed the course in 1914, during a prolific period when he was shaping much of New England's golf landscape. The property's natural contours and rocky New England character provided Ross with the kind of rolling, irregular ground he preferred for routing, and the layout moves across ridges and through wooded corridors typical of the region's coastal topography.

The course reflects Ross's signature design principles: greens with subtle internal movement and false fronts, strategic bunkering that rewards precise approach play, and holes that offer multiple angles of attack depending on pin position. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes throughout, with several holes playing uphill or downhill and offering long views across Salem and the surrounding landscape. The par threes vary in length and character, and the longer two-shot holes demand both accuracy and course management given the green complexes.

Kernwood has hosted numerous Massachusetts Golf Association championships and remains a fixture in regional amateur competition. The club maintains a traditional private membership and operates as a seasonal facility, typical of courses in the Northeast.
