DENISON GOLF CLUB AT GRANVILLE
🇺🇸 Granville, OH, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

Denison Golf Club at Granville occupies rolling terrain in central Ohio, approximately thirty miles east of Columbus. The course was designed by Donald Ross and opened in the 1920s during the architect's most prolific period. Ross routed the layout across natural contours that provide elevation changes and strategic interest typical of his work in the Midwest, where he adapted his design principles to inland settings far from his better-known coastal projects.
The course features characteristic Ross elements including crowned greens with subtle internal contours, strategic bunkering that rewards thoughtful placement over distance, and holes that incorporate the property's natural slopes. The routing takes advantage of wooded areas and open meadows, creating variety in both playing corridors and visual character. Several holes play across or along ridgelines, while others occupy lower ground with different wind exposure and approach angles.
Denison Golf Club serves the university community of Denison University, which has maintained the facility since its establishment. The course functions as both a recreational amenity for students, faculty, and members, and as the home venue for the university's golf programs. The setting in Granville, a small historic village with New England architectural influences, provides a quiet college-town atmosphere distinct from urban or resort golf environments.
The layout has undergone periodic maintenance and restoration work over the decades to preserve Ross's design intent while accommodating modern playing standards and turf management practices.
Reviews
A classic Ross course that is a gem. Easily my favorite public track in Columbus
I have only played the front nine. Super narrow in Donald Ross fashion. I would like to revisit my review after I have played 18 here.
When I heard there was a Donald Ross designed course within an hour of me I had to make the trip. Also, when I saw the price I was expecting this place to knock my socks off. Sadly this could’ve not have been less true. Maybe it’s just not my style of course but I thought it was overrated and overpriced. Additionally the pace of play was awful. The only defense of this course seemed to just be growing the grass out weirdly long to protect pretty basic and repetitive holes. The highlight of this course had to be the greens. I think that uncle Donny did a good job crafting creative fun greens.
Donald Ross left his mark on countless courses across the country. Only for a select number of those courses was he physically present for construction: Denison Golf Club being one. The course is in the process of celebrating its centennial anniversary and has remained one of Columbus’ finest public offerings. While part of the original course still stands, the course underwent a redesign a few decades ago. Ross’ mark is still evident; there are plenty of bunkers that you think “why would they put a bunker there” and the next thing you know you’re in it! Between challenging greens and top notch course conditions, Denison Golf Club (formerly Granville Golf Course) holds tremendous value to this day.
