Red/Green at The Hartford Golf Club

The Hartford Golf Club, established in 1896, occupies rolling terrain in West Hartford and reflects the contributions of several notable architects across more than a century. Devereux Emmet designed the original eighteen holes in the early 1900s, creating a layout that took advantage of the property's natural contours and mature tree cover. Donald Ross later made revisions to the course, adding his characteristic strategic bunkering and green complexes that reward thoughtful approach play.

The club's two nines—designated Red and Green—combine to form the primary eighteen-hole championship course. The routing moves through corridors of hardwoods and features elevation changes that require golfers to manage uphill and downhill lies throughout the round. The greens typically show the subtle internal movement associated with Ross's design philosophy, demanding accurate distance control and careful attention to pin placement.

More recent restoration work by Stephen Kay and Ron Forse has sought to recapture original design intent while adapting the course to modern playing conditions. These efforts have included rebuilding bunkers to their historic shapes and positions, restoring green contours, and managing tree growth to reopen strategic sight lines and playing angles. The club maintains a traditional private membership and has served as a venue for regional amateur competitions, reflecting its standing within Connecticut golf. The course provides a study in Golden Age design principles as filtered through multiple generations of thoughtful stewardship.
