GEORGE WRIGHT GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Hyde Park, MA, USA
Designed by Donald Ross

George Wright Golf Course, a municipal jewel nestled in the heart of Hyde Park, is a testament to Boston's commitment to accessible, quality golf. Born from the Golden Age of course design, Wright, opened in 1938, unspools across terrain characterized by rolling hills and strategic bunkering. The routing favors a thoughtful approach, rewarding precision over brute strength. A few blind shots keep things interesting, forcing you to test your course knowledge and strategy.
Donald Ross protege, Stanley Thompson, masterfully sculpted the landscape, creating a layout that remains largely unchanged to this day. His design reflects a philosophy of challenging players without overwhelming them, a balance that has endeared the course to generations of Boston golfers.
The course isn't one to be found on most "top 100" lists, but rather a beloved local hub. A hot dog and a cold drink after a round is the norm, a ritual as integral to the George Wright experience as the course itself. It's a place where the game is enjoyed for its own sake, a community gathering spot woven into the fabric of Hyde Park.
Reviews
Great layout, memorable holes, great conditions for muni, incredible value
Best muni in the country. Pace can get slow on weekends, early rounds are best if you can snag one. Big putting green but no range. Layout is sick.
One of the best muni’s in the country. Old Ross layout with dynamic greens, it’s a hilly walk but worth it. If playing for the first time get a GPS going so you know where to hit it, a lot of blind shots! No range, decent putting and chipping area, a warmup net would be a nice addition. Must play in the Boston area.
The best municipal course in the country
One of the better layouts in Boston, great value.
This course always leaves me with one thought after the round, which is “Donald Ross is a bastard”. False fronts and visual trickery dominate the day but overall makes for a fun challenge.
