OAKLEY COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Watertown, MA, USA
Designed by Donald Ross
Oakley Country Club, sculpted into the rolling hills just west of Boston, whispers tales of early 20th-century golf, a time when artistry and natural contours defined the game. The parkland layout, a verdant tapestry woven through mature trees and subtle elevation changes, presents a strategic test where cunning trumps brute force. While not exceptionally long, Oakley rewards calculated approach shots and a deft touch around its well-guarded greens. The course, while private, remains fairly accessible and not brutally difficult.
Designed by Donald Ross in 1922, Oakley bears the hallmarks of his genius, with understated bunkering and greens that subtly repel errant shots. Updates from Ron Forse have ensured the course remains relevant for today's game, respecting Ross's original vision while enhancing playability.
Oakley is a club woven into the fabric of the surrounding communities, a place where multi-generational families gather. While it has not hosted major championships, it remains a hub for local amateur golf, and more importantly a center of social engagement for its members. There is a strong sense of community here that has been cultivated over the past century.
