Alister MacKenzie (1870–1934) was an English golf course architect whose designs span four continents and include some of the most celebrated courses in the world. Originally trained as a surgeon, MacKenzie served as a civilian physician with the British Army during the Boer War, where he developed an interest in camouflage—a principle he later applied to golf course design. He made significant contributions to military camouflage during the First World War before dedicating himself to golf architecture.
MacKenzie designed more than 50 golf courses during his career. Among his most notable works are Cypress Point, Augusta National, and Royal Melbourne's West Course—three layouts that remain widely regarded as among the finest in the world. His portfolio also includes Crystal Downs, Pasatiempo, and the Valley of Montecito in the United States; New South Wales in Australia; and the Old Course at Lahinch in Ireland. Early British commissions include Alwoodley and Moortown in Yorkshire. MacKenzie also worked extensively in California during his later years, producing courses such as the California Golf Club of San Francisco, Meadow Club, and Sharp Park.
He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and remains one of the most influential figures in golf course architecture.
