VALLEY CLUB OF MONTECITO
🇺🇸 Santa Barbara, CA, USA
Designed by Alister Mackenzie, Robert Hunter

Valley Club of Montecito stands as a testament to quiet, understated exclusivity, a haven where golf is paramount, and the pursuit of birdies eclipses the need for grandstanding. Nestled in the heart of its namesake valley, the course embodies classic, early-20th-century parkland design, characterized by gently rolling terrain, mature oak and eucalyptus trees lining the fairways, and subtle elevation changes that reward thoughtful play. While not overly long by modern standards, its strategic bunkering and well-protected greens demand accuracy and creative shot-making rather than brute power.
Originally crafted by Alister MacKenzie—though his involvement is debated and perhaps more accurately attributed to his then associate Robert Hunter—the Valley Club reflects an era where course design emphasized natural contours and strategic angles. The course has seen refinements over the years, always carefully considered to preserve the original character and challenging nature of the layout. It is a course where members relish walking the grounds with their caddies.
Valley Club remains a discreet gathering place for a membership drawn from prominent families and individuals who value privacy and camaraderie above all else. It is said that Bing Crosby was a frequent visitor, drawn to the club's unpretentious atmosphere and the challenge of its meticulously maintained greens. The club boasts an annual, no frills golf tournament that has been a long-standing tradition among the membership, fostering a deep sense of community and shared passion for the game. And after a day on the course, members often gather to enjoy what some have called the best burger in all of Montecito.
Reviews
A nearly original Mackenzie in the us, that the average golfer has never heard of. This place is so special, and such a fun golf experience. Also one of the best chopped salads I’ve ever had.
Warm and welcoming members and staff, incredible golf course, great conditions, and all this in maybe the most perfect setting for golf in the US. One round before I die? It’s Valley Club.
If I had one round to play before I died it would be here. This is my idea of perfection.
