ROYAL MELBOURNE GOLF CLUB
🇦🇺 Black Rock, Victoria, AU
Designed by Alex Russell, Alister Mackenzie, Mick Morcom

West at Royal Melbourne Golf Club is defined by a strategic tension: a world-class championship layout often played amidst the decidedly relaxed atmosphere of its membership. Situated on the celebrated sandbelt region of Melbourne, this composite course is known for its firm, fast-running fairways and deceptively undulating greens. The routing favors thoughtful shot placement over brute force, requiring golfers to navigate the natural contours of the landscape with precision.
A product of the Golden Age, the West Course bears the indelible mark of Dr. Alister MacKenzie, with later refinements by Alex Russell. Its strategic bunkering, particularly around the greens, demands that golfers constantly assess risk versus reward. While visually striking, the bunkering is actually quite strategic and penal, it’s design aesthetic a perfect blend of playability and punishment.
Royal Melbourne's West course, in conjunction with the East, has hosted multiple Presidents Cups, showcasing its capacity to challenge the world's best golfers on a global stage. It also features a notable membership base known for its low-key approach to the game, embracing a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship – the clubhouse environment is always considered to be welcoming for new members to the club.
Reviews
If played when firm and fast I don’t think there is a much better test than Royal Melbourne. It allows both the expert player and the average to below average golfer to use both the air and ground to accomplish similar results. Fantastic place.
This is arguable my favorite course I’ve played. It’s such a wonderful journey through the sand belt terrain. Every hole is so unique and interesting. It is not super long but it tests your game and asks you how much risk you want to take on. It has some of the best set of par 4s as well. Just some really interesting golf and the routing does an amazing job of utilizing the dunes.
