METROPOLITAN GOLF CLUB
🇦🇺 South Oakleigh, Victoria, AU
Designed by Alister Mackenzie

Few courses in the Sandbelt boast the pedigree of Metropolitan, a strategic masterpiece carved from the region's sandy loam in the early 20th century. Dr. Alister MacKenzie, in his Australian tour, reportedly declared Metropolitan’s greens the finest he had ever seen, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship that defines the playing experience to this day.
The original design, by J.B. Carr, was refined over the decades by a series of notable architects, including Dick Wilson and, more recently, Neil Crafter and Paul Mogford. The course favors strategic play over brute force. Gently undulating fairways demand thoughtful club selection, leading to notoriously fast and subtly contoured greens. While the course measures respectably, it's the strategic bunkering, demanding precision, that dictates success, and keeps players mindful of the constant need to approach shots from strategic angles.
Metropolitan hosted the 2018 World Cup of Golf, won by Belgium's Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry, further cementing its place on the global stage, albeit fleetingly. It is a place of old money, not of new status. Known for its understated elegance, the club fosters a strong sense of tradition and camaraderie, a place where the roar of the city fades away with the first tee shot, replaced by the quiet rustle of eucalyptus and the satisfying thud of iron on ball.
