CRYSTAL DOWNS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Frankfort, MI, USA
Designed by Alister Mackenzie, Perry Maxwell

Crystal Downs stands as a monument to a bygone era, a testament to the raw genius of Golden Age architecture nestled along the dramatic bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. The course, shaped by Alister MacKenzie with a crucial assist from Perry Maxwell, plays with a subtle but persistent ruthlessness. Wide fairways invite the bold drive, but strategic bunkering and deceptively contoured greens punish anything less than thoughtful execution – a course where fading the ball is certainly an advantage, especially navigating the doglegs of the back nine.
The spirit of Crystal Downs resonates with a certain understated exclusivity. Forget championship banners and raucous galleries; this is a club where the game is celebrated in its purest form. Its relatively remote location along the shores of Lake Michigan fosters a tight-knit membership known for its deep appreciation of the game and fiercely held traditions.
The club is known for its famously difficult greens, with legend holding that MacKenzie considered them his finest work, though perhaps the most debated. This is a place where the nuances of the putting surface can make or break a round, and where quiet conversation and shared appreciation of the landscape are as valued as a well-struck shot.
Reviews
Truly a Mackenzie masterpiece. The best front 9 maybe on the planet. Green slopes like no where else. Incredible use of the front parts of the property. Mackenzie does a phenomenal job of deception from of the tee. Change in elevation, green slopes, and undulation are prominent along with use of the fescue and tree lining. CD is truly a special place. Very quaint piece of property and surrounding architecture. Great land, views, food, and golf.
It’s a time capsule. Mackenzie and Maxwell took a tilted piece of land and created 3 courses in 1. The start is down to low land, my favorite sections are 5-6-7 and 12 to 15. Very different from each other. I could study the 5th hole all day. I think 13 is among the finest par 4’s anywhere. From Lake Michigan to Crystal Lake the high point views are stunning. The combination of cozy and big scale are phenomenal. I love the place.
Alister Mackenzie gem routed to perfection. Unbelievable piece of land with some of the craziest green contours and incredibly hilly fairways. A golf course I could play every day and never get bored. Lived up to the hype and then some
Probably the best non coastal piece of land I have ever played golf on. Sand dunes rising hundreds of feet on a narrow isthmus between lake michigan and crystal lake. Can see both from the high points on the course. Hard to beat a Mackenzie routing with Maxwell greens. The bowl the front nine sits in is really fun to navigate with some awesome holes going down and back out. Really helpful to have a good caddie the first play through as the greens are wild. Luckily when we were there they were a reasonable speed, something I don't think all old golf courses with slopes green do well. That being said our reads were often several feet or more away from our caddies and he saved us all more than a few strokes. Despite how wild they were the greens were unbelievably fun to play, you had to think about them from every shot starting off the tee on some holes and definitely with every approach. There were plenty of birdies to be had if you executed but getting out of position could lead to some numbers quickly. Also not a place that had an imposing vibe, like many of the top private courses in the world. Felt very welcome as a guest which was great.
Best front 9 routing that I’ve played. Par 5 8th might be the best par 5. It climbs back up the hill over a rolling terrain and narrows more and more as you get closer to the hole. You can play it 100 times and not have the same lie. The back 9 is also very good and takes you out back to a different part of the property and has some incredible holes like No. 14 par 3 and 15 a short par 4 that reminds me of a Donald Ross green.
