TITIRANGI GOLF CLUB
🇳🇿 Auckland, Auckland, NZ
Designed by Alister Mackenzie

Titirangi Golf Club occupies a forested hillside site in the Waitakere Ranges on Auckland's western fringe, approximately fifteen kilometers from the city center. Alister MacKenzie designed the course in 1926 during his tour of Australia and New Zealand, making it one of only two MacKenzie designs in New Zealand and among his relatively few completed works in the Southern Hemisphere. The routing moves through native bush and regenerating rainforest, with fairways carved through dense vegetation that includes tree ferns, nikau palms, and mature pohutukawa. The terrain features significant elevation change, and many holes play along sloping ground with fairways that tilt and tumble according to the natural contours.
MacKenzie's strategic principles are evident throughout the layout, particularly in the placement of bunkers to challenge various lines of play and in greens that reward thoughtful approach angles. The course measures relatively short by contemporary standards, placing emphasis on accuracy and course management rather than length. Several holes require carries over gullies or approaches to greens perched on shelf sites carved into the hillside. The native forest creates a sense of isolation uncommon in urban golf, with limited views beyond the property and a playing experience distinct from the links-influenced designs more common in New Zealand.
Titirangi has hosted numerous national championships and remains a fixture in New Zealand golf. The club maintains a traditional membership culture and operates as a private facility, though it welcomes visitors by arrangement.
Reviews
Overall a nice experience playing Makenzie’s only course in NZ. The conditions are not top tier, but the routing layout are so crazy. The course plays longer than what the card says
