Duff House Royal Golf Club occupies parkland on the outskirts of Banff in Aberdeenshire, along Scotland's northeast coast. The course was designed by Alister MacKenzie in 1909, during the early phase of his career before he gained international recognition for his later work at Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne. The layout represents one of his few completed designs in Scotland and predates the strategic principles he would refine over the following decades.

The course runs through relatively flat terrain bordered by mature trees, with the River Deveron forming a natural boundary along portions of the property. MacKenzie's routing makes use of the parkland setting, incorporating subtle land movement and strategic bunkering characteristic of his approach to design. The layout measures modest by modern standards but requires accuracy and course management rather than length. Several holes play along or near the river, introducing both scenic interest and hazard considerations.

Duff House Royal takes its name from the nearby Duff House, a Georgian mansion that serves as a regional art gallery. The club maintains a traditional members' operation, typical of Scottish golf clubs established in the early twentieth century. The course remains relatively quiet compared to the more famous links venues along the Moray Firth and Aberdeenshire coast, offering a parkland alternative in a region known primarily for seaside golf. It provides an opportunity to experience MacKenzie's design work in a setting far removed from his celebrated courses elsewhere.
