50 courses on Course Vaults
Alex Findlay was a prominent Scottish-born golf course architect active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Working primarily across the eastern United States, he designed and laid out dozens of courses during golf's formative era in America. His portfolio reflects the geographic spread of the game during this period, with designs extending from New England through the Mid-Atlantic states and into the South and Midwest.
Among his notable works are Hyannisport Club on Cape Cod, Woods Hole Golf Club in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and San Antonio Country Club in Texas. In the greater Philadelphia region, Findlay designed Llanerch Country Club, Tavistock Country Club in New Jersey, and several other courses that helped establish golf in Pennsylvania communities including Lebanon, Reading, and Yardley. His work in Florida includes the Ocean course at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach and Oceanside Golf and Country Club near Daytona Beach.
Findlay's designs are characterized by their integration with natural terrain and reflect the strategic design principles of golf's Scottish origins adapted to American landscapes. His extensive body of work contributed significantly to making golf accessible across diverse American communities during the sport's early expansion.
