Old Tom Morris stands as one of golf's founding figures, born in St Andrews in 1821 and spending his life shaping the game at its ancestral home. Beyond his four Open Championship victories, Morris became the keeper of the greens at St Andrews Links and a prolific course designer whose influence spread across Scotland and beyond during the latter half of the 19th century.

His design work includes Prestwick—host of the first Open Championship—along with celebrated Scottish links such as Royal County Down's Championship course, Cruden Bay, Nairn, and Muirfield (now Moray Golf Club at Lossiemouth). Morris also shaped courses at Carnoustie, Machrihanish, and Dornoch, establishing routing principles and green complexes that remain influential today. His portfolio extends to Lahinch in Ireland, where his Old course endures as one of the finest links layouts in the British Isles.

Morris worked prolifically throughout Scotland—from Dunbar and Leven Links in the east to Royal Burgess near Edinburgh—and ventured into England with designs including Wallasey and Royal Cromer. His pragmatic approach emphasized natural terrain and strategic challenge, laying groundwork for generations of architects. Morris died in St Andrews in 1908, having witnessed golf's evolution from local pastime to international sport.
