THE ROYAL COUNTY DOWN GOLF CLUB
🇬🇧 Newcastle, Down, Northern Ireland
Designed by George L. Baillie, Old Tom Morris

Royal County Down isn't just a golf course; it's where the Irish landscape sings. Routed through towering dunes along the shores of Dundrum Bay in Newcastle, the links present a raw and relentless test. Early visionaries, including Old Tom Morris and later Harry Colt, sculpted a timeless masterpiece across this challenging terrain.
Playing Royal County Down is like navigating a moonscape; deep heather and gorse line the fairways, ready to punish errant shots. Blind tee shots, dramatic elevation changes, and the ever-present coastal winds demand strategic thinking as much as powerful swings. The course has historically favored players who can expertly shape the ball, particularly those comfortable with a fade into the prevailing breeze.
While the club hasn't hosted a major professional championship in recent years, it remains a proving ground for amateur golf, having held the Walker Cup and the British Amateur Championship. Its global standing is undoubted, and the course continues to draw visitors from around the world.
Beyond the golf, Royal County Down boasts a devoted membership drawn from all walks of Irish life. Many come to experience the challenge of the links and take pleasure in the timeless traditions of the club. After a challenging round, members and visitors alike gather to share stories and laughs, making Royal County Down more than a golf club; it's a gathering place where the spirit of the game is celebrated.
Reviews
Easily top 5 in the world. A one of a kind place.
It was basically a religious experience. 78 and sunny, broke 80, had an amazing caddy that was a member, truly a top 5 golf round of my life!
Ocean or mountains? Why not both
I will never have a more memorable experience than my 75 at RCD including an opening eagle/double bogey start. This will probably be my favorite course in my lifetime.
It’s hard to imagine a more scenic course. Absolutely one that I dream of and am dying to get back to.
What the? #1 course in the world? I wonder if you took it out of where it is and plonked it in the middle of nowhere would it rate the same? Scenery is amazing, was completely underwhelmed by the course itself. There are better courses in Ireland never mind the rest of the the world.
