TAIN GOLF CLUB
🏴 Inverness, The Highlands, Scotland
Designed by Old Tom Morris

Tain Golf Club sits on the Dornoch Firth in the Scottish Highlands, roughly 35 miles north of Inverness. Old Tom Morris laid out the original course in 1890, making it one of the older links in the region. The course occupies a stretch of linksland along the firth, with views across the water toward the hills of Easter Ross. The terrain features the characteristic undulations and natural contours of Scottish links golf, with gorse and native grasses framing the holes.
The routing takes advantage of the coastal setting, with several holes running along the shoreline and others turning inland across more elevated ground. Wind from the firth is a regular factor in play, and the course's exposed position means conditions can shift quickly. The greens are typically firm and fast, and the bunkering reflects Morris's straightforward design philosophy. Tain is less famous than nearby Dornoch, but it shares a similar landscape and traditional links character.
The club has a long-standing local membership and maintains a welcoming atmosphere for visitors exploring Highland golf. The clubhouse overlooks the course and firth, and the club's history is tied to the broader golfing tradition of the region. Tain offers a genuine links experience in a quieter, less commercial setting than some of Scotland's better-known courses.
Reviews
My first links experience. Runs through multiple different settings, from linksland, to farmland, to heathland, and then back again. 11 is one of the best holes I have ever played, full stop. Alps hole where the reveal is the green with the ocean directly behind it. Incredible. Unfortunate that 12 is such a snoozer, but I had a blast here. 15s green is another highlight. A fun cheaper add on to something like Dornoch
