William S. Flynn (1890–1944) was a prominent American golf course architect whose work during the Golden Age of golf design established him among the era's most respected figures. Based in Philadelphia, Flynn created numerous distinguished courses throughout the northeastern United States, with a portfolio that showcased his sophisticated understanding of strategic golf and natural topography.
Flynn's partnership with Howard Toomey proved particularly influential in the Philadelphia region, where their work at courses including Merion Golf Club East Course, Rolling Green Golf Club, and Philadelphia Country Club demonstrated a refined architectural philosophy. The East Course at Merion, which he worked on as a consulting architect, is often named among the most admired courses in the world. His designs at The Kittansett Club, the Cascades course at The Homestead, Cherry Hills Country Club, and Lancaster Country Club further exemplify his ability to craft memorable championship layouts.
Beyond the Mid-Atlantic, Flynn's reach extended to notable projects in New England, Virginia, Ohio, and Florida. His work balanced playability with strategic challenge, creating courses that have stood the test of time and remain highly regarded within the golf architecture community. Flynn's premature death in 1944 cut short a brilliant career, but his legacy endures through dozens of courses that continue to challenge and delight golfers.
