ATLANTIC CITY COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Northfield, NJ, USA
Designed by Howard C. Toomey, John Reid, Tom Doak, William S. Flynn, Willie Park Jr.
Atlantic City Country Club whispers of golfing ghosts, a hallowed ground where the term "birdie" was first coined. Set just outside Atlantic City in Northfield, NJ, the club unfolds across terrain reminiscent of Scottish links, though tempered by the coastal climate. The layout, with its undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers, rewards strategic play over brute force, with a premium on approach shots. The breezes of the Jersey shore test the player, especially on the inward nine. The course has a few blind shots, but is mostly in full view to the player. Favoring neither a draw nor a fade, it suits the player that can work the ball in both directions.
Originally designed by Willie Park Jr., a two-time Open Champion, the course has seen subtle refinements over the years to maintain its classic appeal while meeting the demands of the modern game. The club retains a timeless quality and remains a testament to Park's design vision.
While not a regular stop on the professional tour schedule today, Atlantic City Country Club once held a prominent place in the golfing world, notably hosting six US Women's Open Championships in its illustrious history. The club's commitment to the game’s heritage is evident in its meticulously preserved clubhouse and unwavering dedication to the traditions of golf.
Beyond the course, the club cultivates a familial atmosphere among its membership. With a membership mostly made up of locals, it's the type of club where everyone knows one another. They are often found gathering to celebrate wins, tell stories and share in the camaraderie. And of course, enjoy the local fare of the Jersey Shore, especially seafood.
Reviews
Very scorable course if it isn’t windy. Maybe the best locker room in golf
I was fortunate to play here often during my high school and college summers thanks to a good friend who belonged. We were usually the first ones out - 5:30 a.m. wake-ups on little to no sleep after late nights down the shore. Adrenaline carried us, and those early rounds with my closest pals remain some of my fondest memories growing up. Part of this review is no doubt laced with nostalgia - especially when I think back to the days we were rained out by summer storms and played poker in the locker room to pass the time. That said, it’s a terrific course. Always in pristine condition, with a layout that holds up no matter how many times you play it. The back nine is particularly memorable - looking out across the marshes with the Atlantic City skyline in the distance - a unique contrast of natural beauty and neon energy. And here’s a fun bit of history: Atlantic City is where the term “birdie” was first coined. That alone makes it a landmark in the story of golf. P.S. - their breakfast sandwiches are special!
ACCC is a must play if you’re in Atlantic City. The back 9 is breathtaking and will leave you wanting to play it again
