The best golf courses in Franklin, New Jersey

“Very tough opening stretch of holes, excellent par 5s, and generally thoughtful routing (loved the shared teebox on 16). Road hole reminded me of Merion.”

“A very cool Raynor design. A bit short for the modern game, but still a good mix of long and short holes. Middle of the golf course has some serious teeth.”

“North Jersey is an excellent example of how to make a course difficult in the modern game. Some extremely tough but fair greens are the equalizer to this course playing 6,700 yards from the tips. Really fun and challenging layout.”

“Rockaway is a real old school course that is usually kept in pretty good shape. Layout isn’t the best, a bit repeatable and a really crammed back 9. It’s a solid course, but definitely has had the modern game pass it by a bit.”

“Black Oak is a tough mountain style course. Usually kept in decent shape. Layout is very unique. Targets are pretty small which makes hitting it straight a must. Holes 13-18 are different from the rest of the course and the best stretch.”

“Can see right away why it’s rated the best public in NJ. Great pro shop. Course is challenging but fair. Course is always in great condition. It’s on the pricier side but well worth the money if you want to treat yourself for the day.”

“Interesting enough course but nothing to write home about. Only pulled driver twice and still had wedges into most holes - can’t tell if that’s a feature or a bug, though we played up as the other guys were mid-to-high teens players.”

“Very mediocre course. A few cool and unique holes but no great ones. Greens very slow. Bunkers are very good.”

“Over priced for what it is. Difficult course with narrow fairways. Fairways have 100s of divots that no one seems to repair. Practice area is limited to irons only and the ball machine was broken when I was there.”

“Extremely hilly course with a ton of elevation change. Conditions were fine, but inconsistent as the course is on the side of a mountain. Some great variety with the layout, but no really great holes. Last 4 holes are really flat and uninteresting…”

“Interesting course but pace is slow, golf carts barely worked and half the bunkers were ground under repair”

“Black Bear is a fun resort mountain style course apart of Crystal Springs. Conditions are usually good, some cool risk reward holes with elevation changes. Not a bad day.”

“This course is ridiculously tight with undulating fairways that are punishing to great shots. They put us out directly behind an outing so our round took well over 5 hours.”
