David McLay Kidd

David McLay Kidd is a Scottish golf course architect whose work has helped define the modern revival of walking-friendly, naturalistic golf design. His breakout project, Bandon Dunes in Oregon, opened in 1999 and is often named among the most admired courses in the world, establishing both his reputation and the resort's acclaim. That success led to an array of celebrated designs across North America, including Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley, the Sands and Quicksands courses at Gamble Sands, and Tetherow.

Kidd's philosophy emphasizes integration with native landforms and a return to traditional values—heathland character, strategic bunkering, and walkability—over manufactured spectacle. His design of Queenwood in Surrey, opened in 2001, deliberately evoked England's heathland classics through extensive use of heather on bunker faces and naturalized aesthetics. Other designs in the Course Vaults portfolio span from Nanea in Hawaii to the Montagu course at Fancourt in South Africa, reflecting his adaptability to diverse terrain. He is based in Bend, Oregon.
