GUACALITO GOLF COURSE
🇳🇮 Manzanillo, Rivas, NI
Designed by David McLay Kidd
Guacalito occupies a dramatic Pacific coastline site in southwestern Nicaragua, roughly twenty miles north of the Costa Rican border. David McLay Kidd routed the course across rugged terrain that combines volcanic rock outcroppings, native tropical vegetation, and elevated views of the ocean. The design takes advantage of significant elevation changes, with several holes playing along clifftops and others descending toward the beach, creating a varied walking experience through the coastal landscape.
The course reflects Kidd's characteristic approach of working with natural landforms rather than imposing heavily manufactured features. Fairways move through corridors of indigenous trees and scrub, and the routing incorporates the property's existing topography to create strategic interest. Several holes offer direct ocean views, while others turn inland through more sheltered terrain. The green complexes tend toward naturalistic shaping that echoes the surrounding volcanic geology.
Guacalito functions as part of a residential and resort development along Nicaragua's Pacific coast, an area that has seen limited golf course construction compared to more established Central American destinations. The property sits in a region known for consistent surf breaks and relatively undeveloped beaches. Access typically involves travel through the town of Rivas, the departmental capital, with the course serving both resort guests and a small local membership base drawn from the expatriate and Nicaraguan communities in the Tola area.
