Woking Golf Course

Woking Golf Club, established in 1893, occupies heathland terrain in Surrey's celebrated golf corridor, roughly thirty miles southwest of London. Tom Dunn laid out the original course on land characterized by sandy soil, heather, pine, and silver birch—the classic ingredients of English heathland golf. The club sits within a region that includes Sunningdale, Walton Heath, and other distinguished layouts on similar ground, all benefiting from the free-draining, naturally firm conditions that define this style of golf. The routing moves through gently rolling heathland with corridors framed by mature trees and patches of heather and gorse. The course measures modest by modern standards but demands accuracy and thoughtful positioning, particularly on approach shots to small, subtly contoured greens. Several holes play across or along natural undulations, and the sandy subsoil ensures the turf plays firm and fast much of the year. Bunkers are traditional in style, often deep and positioned to challenge both tee shots and approaches. Woking has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a well-regarded members' club with a traditional atmosphere. The clubhouse and grounds reflect the Edwardian origins of the club, and the membership maintains a low-key, understated culture typical of older English heathland clubs. The course is less widely known internationally than some of its neighbors but is respected among those familiar with Surrey's heathland golf for its natural character and strategic interest on a compact, walkable property.
