A south pittsburgh staple Victory hills is one of those public tracks that’s on everyone’s rotation. Clubhouse that looks 100 years old? Check. Carts with no auto brake that might run on diesel? Check. A hole that borders a horse stable right in the flight path of most slicers? Check. For 50 or 60 dollars on the weekends you actually get a nice value. The cart paths are genuinely the worst I’ve ever seen on a course. The tee boxes tend to be shredded. The routing isn’t winning any awards. But the most important things about a good public track? Greens and character, and Victory nails both. When people complain about the carts paths I simply ask if they’d rather have smooth paths or smooth greens? It’s clear the money is going into the greens and they consistently dominate other public tracks in the area. Of course there will be some divots but for $60 you can play 18 fast and smooth greens on a decent piece of land. It’s easy enough to lure you into getting greedy but on a good day you can go low here. Due to all the positives above the course is usually busy and rounds are SLOW. If you want to play in 4 hours this is not the place for you. If you want to spend your day on the course with 3 buddies with some beers and have a match this is the spot. The ladies working the kitchen are lovely and have seemingly been there forever. The food is exceptional. Victory is a proper public course and I recommend for anyone in the area.
I think this course encapsulates everything that is right with local public golf. Some holes are great and some holes are mid but for the price you are playing you will have a good time. The highlight of my trip to victory hills was easily when everyone told the nice old lady at the club we were good with one hot dog each then my buddy reis made this old lady turn the grill back on so he could get a second dog.
