Most praise the impeccably maintained conditions, particularly the firm, fast Poa greens and approach areas, along with green complexes that range from tiered to "complete roller coaster rides." Reviewers note the strategic, links-style routing plays well for all skill levels, with layered hole designs—like the drivable but hazard-laden par-4 7th—that reward creativity and make the course highly replayable. The layout features only two par 5s but balances well with thoughtful par 4s and 3s over walkable terrain with gradual elevation changes. While PA has an amazing collection of tradition high end courses such as Oakmont merion aronomink etc… Many of the pre 1940 clubs tend to get over shadowed by the major championship hosting big brothers. There are some incredible Tilly, Ross, and other golden age designs that tend to be under appreciated especially in western PA. Fox Chapel Golf Club falls into this category. A 1923 par 70 Seth Raynor design that boasts one of the best collections of greens ever created by the legendary architect. This is template golf at its very best. Immaculate Poa greens and approach area allow this course to play firm and fast. Gradual elevation changes make this one of the easier walks in western Pa while still providing a mix of sloped shots throughout. The green complexes range from standard tiered/flat greens to complete roller coaster rides. A course that’s playable for all skill levels with a major emphasis on ball on ground links style. A 15 will have just as much fun trying to make pars a 5 will have trying to unlock the secrets to making birdies. With only two par 5s (hole 2&18) the routing balances out 4s and 3s where you don’t feel the large gap between the 5s. Every hole is a strategic golf Disneyland but my current favorite hole is the short par 4 7th. Playing only 270ish from the blue tees driving the green is possible but a large mound front adds layers to every shot. The mound sits partially apart of the green complex with part of the pitting surface on sloping severely away due to the mound. For those trying to drive the green the mound acts as a hazard both kicking balls to the left side of the green where the pin rarely sits and by also catching balls that miss right. Any drives that are on or behind the mound area are left with a blind forced flop shot. Any drives left flirt with the road that runs up the left side of the entire hole. Even a layup is met with resistance with 2 well placed bunkers in the fairway. Every hole at Fox Chapel has layers like this which makes this course incredibly replayable. The conditions are always top notch and while the membership is wealthy and exclusive it always feels welcoming. This course is a model example of well thought out golf holes and it’s only flaw is that there’s only 18 of them…
Impeccably maintained. Layout and template holes are fantastic. Lock rooms and clubhouse are top notch. A must play if given the opportunity.
