The Chain Course
Bowling Green, FL, USA

At Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Florida, The Chain is where the spirit of match play thrives, a layout intentionally crafted for spirited contests and memorable wagers among friends. Carved from the undulating terrain of former phosphate mines, its modern design by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw presents a stark contrast to the manicured perfection of traditional courses. The Chain favors strategic shot-making over brute force, rewarding creativity with approaches and cunning course management. Coore & Crenshaw, known for their minimalist approach, allowed the natural contours to dictate the course's character. This resulted in a collection of holes marked by unique challenges—blind shots, risk-reward carries, and greens demanding precision. Expect the unexpected, a playful nod to old-school golf where adaptability is key, and a meticulously planned round can quickly unravel in the face of an unforeseen bounce. While The Chain hasn’t played host to major championships, it is the favored destination for a different kind of competition. Regular member games and interclub matches are fiercely contested here, often culminating in boisterous post-round gatherings. The club's camaraderie is as integral to the experience as the challenging layout itself. Adding to The Chain’s distinctive character is the signature “Walking Taco,” a culinary staple fueling many a hard-fought round. It's a testament to Streamsong's embrace of relaxed, unpretentious luxury, making it a memorable destination not just for its exceptional golf, but for the unique culture it fosters.

If you are taking a trip to streamsong the chain is a must play. It’s a great course to play when you first arrive, after a long day on other courses, or before you leave the resort on your last day. It’s a great place to grab a couple Little Payne Creeks, and play a fun format like scramble or alt shot with your group. The beauty of this course is you can make it as easy or as hard as you want. You can also play it with a full bag or even just one club. You can make holes play from 30 yards to 185 if you so choose. The highlight of the chain to me is the views and the incredible green complexes that it has. Some people might call greens silly or too hard but I think that it the fun of a short course. If you don’t hit a great shot or land it in the right spot your ball could funnel 100ft from the hole or off the green. Highly recommend to visit the chain and play a match with your group to decides who picks up the first round of drinks at dinner.
