Tara Iti Course
Mangawhai, Northland, NZ

Tara Iti emerged from windswept dunes north of Auckland as a challenge to both the golfer and the notion that championship caliber golf couldn't thrive on pure sand. Built for strategy more than brute force, the course meanders in two loops along the coastline with wide fairways encouraging aggressive lines into the green, and penalizing misses into the native grasses. This is a thinking man's links where imaginative shot-making is rewarded over sheer power. Designed by Tom Doak, the modern era course showcases his minimalist approach, working with, rather than against, the dramatic landscape. Undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers—often cut directly into the dunes—define the course, demanding precision from tee to green. While not having hosted any major professional events, its reputation among discerning golfers has solidified its position as a premier destination. Though located at the tip of the North Island, Tara Iti has garnered global attention for its unique blend of rugged beauty and challenging play. Its exclusivity fosters a tight-knit community; members and their guests often recount tales of friendly competition and shared appreciation for the landscape over a meal of locally sourced seafood. A round at Tara Iti is not merely about the score, but the immersive experience of golf at its purest, played in harmony with the elements.

Quite simply as good as it gets. Hard to imagine a course let alone experience that tops Tara Iti
The place is pure sensory blitzkrieg with ocean, dunes and native grasses splattered every which way. A seismic dune eclipsing in view to the north, and the foreboding Hen Island 10mi in the distance, make this visual experience unmatched, maybe by anything in the universe. Like being dropped onto another planet. And the golf is pretty decent as well, not a perfect golf course but the setting and many strategic holes, highlighted by #7, will stay with me a long time. Pure class and effortlessly cool club and hang.

Most international visitors arrive via Auckland Airport, New Zealand's primary gateway, before embarking on a scenic 90-minute drive north along State Highway 1 into the windswept Northland coast. The route gradually sheds the city's sprawl for rolling farmland and glimpses of the Hauraki Gulf, before a final turn toward Mangawhai delivers you through quiet coastal scrub to the edge of the Tasman Sea. Tara Iti Golf Club reveals itself only at the last moment - a low-profile sanctuary tucked into the dunes, where the roar of the Pacific announces your arrival at one of the world's most coveted and closely held golfing experiences.
