Tom Doak

Tom Doak is an American golf course architect widely regarded as one of the most influential minimalist designers of the modern era. A former student of Pete Dye, Doak draws significant inspiration from Golden Age architects, particularly Alister MacKenzie, about whom he authored a book. His design philosophy emphasizes natural landforms, strategic options, and restraint in earth-moving—principles evident across his portfolio.

Doak's original designs include Pacific Dunes and Old MacDonald at Bandon Dunes, Ballyneal in Colorado, and Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania. His international work extends to highly regarded courses in New Zealand, including Tara Iti, Cape Kidnappers, and Te Arai Links (North). He also completed a notable restoration of MacKenzie's Pasatiempo in 2007 and has undertaken renovation work at classic courses such as San Francisco Golf Club, Yeamans Hall, and Garden City Golf Club.

Beyond design, Doak is known for The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, an unvarnished assessment of courses worldwide that influenced architectural discourse despite—or because of—its frank critiques. His Renaissance Ink firm also operates a Doak Scale rating system. Based in Michigan, Doak continues to produce courses that frequently appear among the world's most admired designs.
