Sandy Lodge Golf Club

Sandy Lodge occupies a distinctive sandy heath site in Northwood, approximately fifteen miles northwest of central London. The course was established in 1910 on land characterized by the free-draining sandy soil and natural heathland vegetation typical of this geological belt running through northwest London and into Hertfordshire. The original layout was designed by Mr. Markes, with subsequent revisions by Harry Vardon, the six-time Open Champion who lent his expertise to numerous courses during the early twentieth century. The routing makes effective use of the property's natural undulations and mature tree cover. The course plays across gently rolling terrain with several elevation changes that provide variety in stance and shot requirements. Sandy subsoil ensures good drainage and firm playing conditions throughout much of the year, while stands of pine, birch, and oak frame many holes. The layout features a mix of hole lengths and strategic challenges, with heathland character evident in the bunkering style and the presence of gorse and heather in certain areas. Several holes require careful navigation around established trees that define playing corridors. Sandy Lodge has served as a venue for various regional and national amateur competitions over the decades, reflecting its standing among London-area clubs. The club maintains a traditional members' club atmosphere, with a clubhouse that has been updated while preserving period features. The course remains a well-regarded example of accessible heathland golf within Greater London's suburban belt.
