Pointe/Desert Course
DeWinton, Alberta, CA

Heritage Pointe Golf & Country Club sits in the rolling foothills southwest of Calgary, near the hamlet of DeWinton. The property features two distinct eighteen-hole layouts designed by Bill Newis and Ron Garl, who routed the courses across terrain that transitions from open prairie to wooded coulees. The Pointe and Desert courses take their names from the contrasting landscape characteristics found across the site, with the routing incorporating natural elevation changes and native grasses typical of southern Alberta's foothill environment. Bill Newis, a Canadian architect with numerous Alberta designs to his credit, collaborated with Florida-based Ron Garl on the project. The courses reflect both designers' attention to strategic variety, with holes that move through different vegetation zones and utilize the property's natural contours. The layout takes advantage of views toward the Rocky Mountains to the west while incorporating the native fescue and rough grasses that define the region's golf aesthetic. Heritage Pointe opened in the late 1980s and established itself as one of the Calgary area's more prominent private club facilities. The club has hosted regional amateur competitions and serves as a year-round facility when weather permits, typical of Alberta golf operations. The dual-course setup allows for member play across varied conditions and design philosophies, with each eighteen presenting different challenges in wind exposure and shot values shaped by the foothill topography.
