Desert/Heritage Course
DeWinton, Alberta, CA

Heritage Pointe Golf & Country Club opened in 1988 in DeWinton, a rural community southwest of Calgary. The course was designed by Bill Newis, a Canadian architect who worked extensively in Alberta, with consulting input from American designer Ron Garl. The property occupies rolling prairie terrain where the foothills begin their rise toward the Rocky Mountains, visible to the west on clear days. The routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes and incorporates both open meadowland and stands of mature trees. The layout features two distinct nines that reflect the collaborative design approach. The front nine plays through more wooded corridors with tighter driving lanes, while the back nine opens onto broader prairie vistas with greater exposure to wind. Several holes incorporate water hazards, including ponds that come into play on approach shots. The course measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, providing length suitable for competitive play while offering multiple tee options for recreational rounds. Heritage Pointe has hosted regional amateur championships and serves as a private club with an active membership drawn largely from Calgary's southern suburbs. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that accommodates member dining and social functions. The course represents a period of golf development in Alberta during the late 1980s when designers worked to create championship-length layouts that could handle the region's variable weather conditions and strong winds.
