Pinhal Golf Course occupies a distinctive position in Vilamoura's golf landscape as one of the Algarve resort's earliest championship layouts. The course was designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1976, with later modifications attributed to Robert Trent Jones Sr. during the 1980s. This collaboration between two prominent golf architects of the era resulted in a layout that reflects both European sensibilities and American strategic design principles. The course routes through mature umbrella pine forest—pinhal translates to "pine grove" in Portuguese—which gives the property its character and name.
