Vale do Lobo Ocean and Royal Golf Courses

The Oceano Course at Vale do Lobo was designed by Sir Henry Cotton and opened in 1968, making it one of the Algarve's pioneering championship layouts. Cotton, a three-time Open Champion, brought his understanding of strategic golf to this coastal property, creating a course that balances accessibility with genuine challenge. The layout was later refined by Rocky Roquemore in the 1990s, though it retains Cotton's original routing and design philosophy. The course occupies relatively flat terrain characteristic of the Algarve coastline, running through umbrella pines and alongside residential development that has grown up around the property over the decades. The routing moves through corridors of pine forest before reaching its signature stretch along the Atlantic cliffs. The most celebrated holes are the 9th through 11th, which play directly beside dramatic red sandstone cliffs that drop to the beach below. These clifftop holes, particularly the par-three 11th, require carries over ravines and demand precise club selection in the coastal winds. Vale do Lobo established itself as a destination resort in the late 1960s and helped define golf tourism in southern Portugal. The Oceano Course, along with its companion Royal Course, serves a mix of resort guests and club members. The layout remains a popular choice for visitors seeking a traditional European resort experience, combining Cotton's strategic design with the natural drama of the Algarve coastline.
