RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks

Marshwood is one of three 18-hole courses at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Highland Oaks facility in Dothan, Alabama. Opened in 1989 as part of the Trail's inaugural phase, the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. with Roger Rulewich, who served as senior design associate on many of the Trail projects. The RTJ Golf Trail was conceived to promote golf tourism across Alabama, and Highland Oaks represents the Trail's presence in the southeastern corner of the state, near the Florida and Georgia borders. The course occupies rolling terrain characteristic of the Wiregrass region, with mature pines and hardwoods framing fairways that move through elevation changes more pronounced than the coastal plain topography might suggest. Jones incorporated his signature design elements: large, contoured greens with multiple pin positions, strategic bunkering both greenside and in landing zones, and water hazards that require thoughtful club selection. The routing takes advantage of natural ridges and valleys, creating variety in both shot values and visual presentation. Marshwood shares the Highland Oaks complex with the Magnolia and Highlands courses, giving visitors access to 54 holes of championship-caliber golf. The facility maintains the Trail's founding mission of offering high-quality public golf at accessible rates. Conditioning standards across the complex remain consistent with the Trail's reputation for well-maintained playing surfaces, and the courses attract both local members and traveling golfers exploring Alabama's golf offerings.
